How to Write Ad Headlines That Lower CPC (and Increase CTR)

Headlines don’t win because they’re clever — they win because they’re clear, specific, and easy to believe. This guide shows the headline patterns that consistently perform in arbitrage-style tests, and how to use this tool to iterate fast.

What a Headline Must Do in 2 Seconds

In paid traffic, your headline competes with dozens of distractions. A headline that “kind of makes sense” is usually a losing headline. The best headlines do three things fast:

1) Signal the topic (so the right user stops), 2) communicate the angle (so it feels relevant), and 3) create a reason to click (without feeling scammy).

If you’re running arbitrage tests, CTR matters because it influences your effective CPM and often your auction dynamics. But CTR alone isn’t the goal — it’s CTR from the right user.

How to Use the Headline Score Correctly

Think of the score as a filter, not a judge. A 90 doesn’t guarantee a winner, but a 30 usually means the headline is confusing, vague, or missing a clear payoff.

A practical workflow:write 5 → test top 3 → rewrite weakest 1 → repeat. In two iterations you’ll usually land on a strong “control” headline.

Use the notes to fix one variable at a time (clarity, urgency, specificity). Don’t rewrite everything at once or you won’t know what improved the score.

Headline Patterns That Work (Without Being Spam)

These patterns are consistently strong across niches because they reduce uncertainty:

Specific promise: “Get X in Y days” / “Save $X per month” (only if believable).

Eligibility angle: “See if you qualify for…” (works well for finance/insurance).

Local angle: “In {city}” / “Near you” (works for home services).

Curiosity + clarity: “Most people do X wrong — here’s the fix” (avoid vague clickbait).

Connect Headlines to the Rest of Your Funnel

A high-scoring headline doesn’t matter if the niche is too expensive. The fastest way to avoid wasted spend is to chain the tools:

1
Discover ideas

Start with demand movement so you’re not guessing what to test.

2
Validate economics

Confirm CPC + margin before you invest in creative iteration.

3
Model outcomes

Turn assumptions into a breakeven plan so you scale intentionally.

4
Scale winners

Track angles + GEOs that hold margin so you can repeat them.

Examples: Weak → Strong Rewrites

Weak: “Best jobs available now”
Stronger: “Warehouse jobs hiring in {city}: apply in 2 minutes”

Weak: “Save money today”
Stronger: “Cut your internet bill by $30/mo (see plans in {geo})”

Weak: “Get insurance”
Stronger: “See today’s auto insurance quotes in {state}
